Result
- The video does not show the air attack launched by Iran on Israel on April 14, 2024.
- The footage, shared for the first time on February 7, 2024, was recorded in the Izhevsk region of Russia.
- Upon reviewing local Russian news from the relevant date, it is understood that the explosion in the video occurred during the testing of rocket motors at the Votkinsk factory located in the Ijevsk region.
Claim Spread
On April 2, 2024, an attack was carried out on the Iranian Consulate located in the capital of Syria, Damascus, resulting in the loss of 12 lives. Iran had promised a “response” for this attack attributed to Israel.
Iran, however, carried out this attack in the early hours of last Sunday (April 14, 2024). The air strike conducted with drones and missiles raised the possibility of a new war.
Therefore, the incident became the most talked-about topic on social media. The attack by Iran was reported with shared footage, and comments were made on it. However, not all of these footages were real. For example, a troubling video shared with the claim that it depicted the moment Iran attacked Tel Aviv was falsely attributed.
For this reason, it is of great importance to be skeptical of the information and images shared on social media in times of crisis.
Evidence
The video shared on February 7, 2024, which we found as a result of reverse image search, was titled “Ижевск, 7 февраля (Ijevsk, February 7)” in Russian.
When the relevant video is compared with the alleged video, although ambient sounds and moments do not match exactly, it is noticed that many things are the same in the footage. Therefore, it seems plausible that the videos could be parts of a longer video or recorded consecutively from the same location. Moreover, considering that the video was shared on February 7, 2024, we can conclude that the footage at least does not depict Iran’s current attack on Israel.
However, the Russian title of the video also raises suspicions that this is not a video recorded in Israel. For this reason, we accessed local news in Russian as a result of an internet search using the keywords taken from the title of the video (Ижевск, 7 февраля).
According to the news from the area on February 7, the explosion took place during the testing of rocket engines at the testing ground of the Votkinsk factory in the Izhevsk region.
